The Maid of Orleans: A Tragedy
by Friedrich Schiller from 1801
About
Schiller's Die Jungfrau von Orleans (1801) dramatizes the life of Joan of Arc in a manner quite different from either Shaw's later version or the historical record — Schiller gives Joan a romantic subplot and a death in battle rather than at the stake, transforming the historical martyr into a Romantic heroine of supernatural mission. The play was one of the most beloved in the German repertoire throughout the nineteenth century; Tchaikovsky wrote an opera based on it. It is less historically disciplined than Mary Stuart but more lyrically beautiful, and Joan's speeches — particularly her response to the voice calling her to France — have genuine power.
