The Story of Burnt Njal
by (anon.) from c. 1270–1290 CE
About
Njáls saga (c. 1270-1290) is the greatest of the Icelandic family sagas — a vast narrative of feud, law, and fate set over fifty years in medieval Iceland: the friendship between the wise lawyer Njal and the warrior Gunnar, and how their community's failure to contain violence destroys them both. Dasent's nineteenth-century translation preserves the saga's laconic style. Set-piece confrontations and legal speeches work well in extract.
Translated from the original Norwegian.
