Plays by August Strindberg, First Series

by August Strindberg from c. 1897–1904

About

This collection of Strindberg's plays in Edwin Björkman's translations was central to bringing the Swedish playwright to English-language audiences. Strindberg is the great experimentalist of Northern European drama — by turns naturalist, symbolist, and expressionist depending on which period of his intensely productive career these plays represent. The Dream Play and A Ghost Sonata belong to his late expressionist phase; the earlier naturalist works like Miss Julie anticipate the psychological brutality of O'Neill. Strindberg's influence on twentieth-century theater is second only to Ibsen's among Scandinavian playwrights.
