Fables of La Fontaine
by Jean de La Fontaine from 1668–1694
About
La Fontaine's Fables (1668-1694) are the supreme verse fables in the Western tradition and the definitive reworking of Aesop: 240 fables in verse that transform the spare ancient parables into elaborate, ironic, formally beautiful poems. 'La Cigale et la Fourmi,' 'Le Corbeau et le Renard,' 'Le Lièvre et la Tortue' — these have been the core of French literary education for three centuries. Elizur Wright's English verse translation captures something of their elegance.
Translated from the original French.
