Fiore di Leggende: Cantari Antichi I
by Ezio Levi (ed.) from 13th–14th century CE
About
This collection of medieval Italian cantari — the narrative ballads of itinerant storytellers that predate the ottava rima of Renaissance epic — preserves the oral narrative poetry of Italy between the 13th and 14th centuries. Arthurian, Carolingian, and oriental material reveals how medieval narrative circulated among the people before being fixed in literary form. Individual cantari (30-45 minutes) are accessible with a brief historical introduction.
