Alcott's first published work (1854), written when she was sixteen, is a collection of fairy tales about flower spirits — original stories of remarkable lyric beauty that show the literary imagination that would later produce Little Women. The stories are gentle, moral, and full of garden imagery that anticipates the pastoral mode of Victorian children's literature. As group reading, individual tales (15-25 minutes) work well with young readers.
