The Works of Aphra Behn, Volume IV
by Aphra Behn from c. 1686–1696 (Behn Vol. IV)
About
The fourth volume of Behn's collected works continues her output for the Restoration stage, showcasing the range and sophistication of England's first professional woman playwright. Behn wrote with an insider's knowledge of political intrigue — she had worked as a spy for Charles II — and her plays bring that worldliness to comedies of manners that rival Congreve and Wycherley for wit. This volume includes plays that were performed at Drury Lane and Dorset Garden Theatre before mixed and often enthusiastic audiences. Behn's reputation suffered badly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as standards of propriety tightened; her full rehabilitation came with the feminist criticism of the 1970s onward.
