Su Shi (蘇軾, 1037-1101), known as Su Dongpo, was the greatest poet, essayist, and calligrapher of the Song dynasty — and perhaps the most complete man of letters China has ever produced. His ci (song lyrics) combine the formal constraints of the form with a philosophic depth and personal directness that his contemporaries found revolutionary. 水調歌頭 (Shuidiao Getou), written on the Mid-Autumn Festival thinking of his brother, is among the most beloved poems in Chinese literature.
