The Man from Snowy River
by A. B. Paterson from 1895
About
Paterson's 'Banjo' verse includes 'The Man from Snowy River' — Australia's most beloved poem — and 'Waltzing Matilda' (though the tune makes the poem incomplete on the page). The title poem's account of a young man on an inferior horse who descends a cliff no professional rider would attempt to turn a runaway herd is a founding myth of Australian democratic nationalism: the outsider, the little man, who outperforms the establishment. The ballad meter drives it forward with irresistible energy.
