The Original Fables of La Fontaine
by Jean de La Fontaine from 1668–1694 (La Fontaine); this trans. 1885
About
Tissot's prose English rendering of La Fontaine gives a different angle on the fables than Wright's verse translation — more faithful to the narrative content, less to the verse music. Comparing the two translations of the same fable is itself an illuminating exercise. The prose versions make the stories' plots cleaner and more immediately accessible, useful as a first introduction before the verse versions.
Translated from the original French.
