The Aeneid

by Virgil from 19 BCE

About

Virgil's Aeneid (19 BCE) is the foundational epic of the Roman tradition and one of the supreme poems of world literature: the story of Aeneas, Trojan exile, who endures war, shipwreck, and a love affair with the Carthaginian queen Dido to found the line that will become Rome. Dryden's 1697 translation — used in this edition — is itself a masterpiece of English verse, rendering Virgil's gravity and pathos with extraordinary skill. The descent to the underworld in Book VI and Dido's abandonment and death in Books I and IV are among the most beautiful passages in the epic tradition.

Translated from the original Latin by John Dryden.
