The Impostures of Scapin
by Molière from 1671
About
Les Fourberies de Scapin (1671) is Molière's most purely farcical creation: the valet Scapin schemes and lies on behalf of two young men in love over their fathers' objections, using a sack as a prop in what became one of the most famous pieces of physical comedy in the French theater. Molière drew on commedia dell'arte and Terence for the material. Nicolas Boileau disapproved; Molière scholars have sometimes been embarrassed by its lowness. But the play has been loved by audiences continuously since 1671 and is among the most reliable of his comedies for sheer laughter, particularly in performance.
