Fables de Florian
by Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian from 1792
About
Florian's Fables (1792) are the most warmly regarded French fables after La Fontaine: lighter in satirical edge, more pastoral in atmosphere, and with a sentimental tenderness that La Fontaine rarely permits himself. Florian adds animal fables to the tradition — notably 'Le grillon' (The Cricket) and 'Le singe qui montre la lanterne magique' — that have their own gentle appeal. As group reading, individual fables (3-8 minutes each) work well for family or party settings.
