Le Avventure di Pinocchio
by Carlo Collodi from 1883
About
Collodi's Pinocchio (1883) is the great Italian children's book and one of the most subversive: a wooden puppet who lies, plays truant, and consistently makes the worst choices imaginable before eventually earning his humanity. The original is considerably darker than the Disney adaptation — Pinocchio is hanged at the end of the original newspaper serial before public outcry revived him — and has the wild episodic energy of a commedia dell'arte scenario. As group reading, Pinocchio and the Fox and Cat give natural character voices.
