The Merry Men, and Other Tales and Fables
by Robert Louis Stevenson from 1887
About
Stevenson's story collection includes the title piece — a Scottish gothic story about a man on a Hebridean island who becomes possessed by the roaring of the wrecked ships in the sound — and 'Markheim,' a psychological ghost story of extraordinary compression. As reading material, 'Markheim' (about a murderer confronted by his own double) is perhaps Stevenson's finest single story and works superbly as a dramatic reading.
