The Argonautica
by Apollonius of Rhodes from c. 270 BCE
About
Apollonius of Rhodes's Argonautica (3rd century BCE) is the only surviving Hellenistic epic: the voyage of Jason and the Argonauts for the Golden Fleece. His portrait of Medea falling in love with Jason — and the horror of what she becomes — is one of the great psychological portraits in ancient literature. Book III (Medea's falling in love) is particularly rich as a standalone reading.
Translated from the original Greek.
