Fables in Slang
by George Ade from 1899
About
Ade's original Fables in Slang (1899) introduced his unique comic genre: American vernacular fables where Proper Nouns are Capitalized For Emphasis and the moral is always devastatingly on-point. 'The Fable of the Base Stealer Who Didn't Know His Place' and similar titles give the tone. These fables are among the funniest American comic writing of the 1890s-1900s.
