Indian Why Stories
by Frank Bird Linderman from 1915 (first publication; oral tradition ancient)
About
Linderman's collection of Crow and Blackfeet traditional stories — gathered from Native elders in the early twentieth century — uses the 'Why stories' format as an entry into the natural world mythology of Plains tribes. Animal characters give natural ensemble voices; individual stories (15-30 minutes) are ideal for campfire or family reading.
