Timon of Athens

by William Shakespeare from c. 1606–08

About

The wealthy Athenian Timon lavishes his fortune on banquets and gifts for his many flatterers, only to find himself abandoned when his money runs out. Consumed by misanthropy, he retreats to a cave outside Athens and curses all humanity until his death, leaving behind a city that never understood what it had lost.
