Island Nights' Entertainments
by Robert Louis Stevenson from 1893
About
Three stories set in the South Seas, written during Stevenson's final years in Samoa: 'The Bottle Imp' (a bottle containing a demon who will grant any wish, but the owner must sell it for less than they paid or burn in hell — there is no obvious end to the recursive logic), 'The Isle of Voices,' and 'The Beach of Falesá.' 'The Bottle Imp' is among the most ingeniously constructed horror stories in English; 'The Beach of Falesá' is a brutally realistic story of colonial exploitation that Stevenson's publisher refused to print without cuts.
