The Captivi and Mostellaria

by Plautus from c. 200–180 BCE

About

Two plays by Plautus — the most theatrical and commercially effective of the Roman comic playwrights. The Captivi (Prisoners) follows an elaborate identity deception between master and slave, set against the backdrop of war and captivity; Lessing called it the most moral play ever written. The Mostellaria (The Haunted House) is a pure comedy of deception: a slave keeps his young master's father away from the house by claiming it is haunted. Both demonstrate Plautus's mastery of comic timing and plot construction; his influence on Molière, Shakespeare, and virtually all subsequent Western comedy is immeasurable.

Translated from the original Latin.
