Helen of Troy, and Other Poems
by Sara Teasdale from 1911
About
Teasdale's first major collection (1911) introduced a voice of unusual emotional directness to American poetry: lyrical, passionate, formally precise, and centered on women's inner lives and desires with a frankness unusual for the period. The title poem imagines Helen of Troy's perspective on the war she caused; other poems range from love lyrics to meditations on beauty and death. Teasdale won the first Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1918 and was enormously popular in her lifetime, though her reputation has faded undeservedly. Her short lyrics are ideal for reading aloud.
